FAQ

What makes UsedVanIsle different?

We are 100% Canadian
We are not part of an American conglomerate
We value reliability through consistent, thoughtful actions (belt and suspenders!)

This site provides tools to encourage follow-through on meetings, clear communication while discouraging no-shows, and discourage unrealistic low-offers on firm priced items. This site provides an easy workflow that we feel makes trading more fair, taking into account commonly reported annoyances of other marketplaces.

What happened to usedvictoria?

They abruptly disappeared without notice in January 2026. Recently, Used.ca has returned under American management by Carpenter Media Group, a Mississippi-based company who owns 150 newspapers in the U.S. and even in Canada.

Does it cost anything to sign up on UsedVI?

No. UsedVanIsle is and always will remain free for members to sign up.

How will I know if I get an internal message?

You will receive an email notification with a link to the message conversation. This is designed to protect your privacy.

Are transactions guaranteed?

No. This site provides communication tools intended to make transactions predictable and fair. Buyers and sellers are encouraged to use the internal messaging system to arrange for a place to meet.

Why does a listing expire?

Listings expire at 60 days and are returned to draft-mode to prevent a backlog of forgotten listings, standard with online classifieds. You will be notified with an opportunity to renew items before they expire.

Why can’t I message a seller when a listing is pending?

A listing is marked Pending when there's an existing, arranged meetup between a seller and buyer. This protects both parties from a flood of messages regarding an item, and from the item being sold to someone else when a meeting or commitment already exists with someone else.

What if I want to sell my item on a first-come-first-serve basis?

No problem, you are free to do so. The seller should indicate this in their listing's description. However, note that arranging a Meetup on the system marks the item Pending, so you may want to manually unmark that to continue receiving interest.

How long does a buyer have to respond to a meetup date and time?

Once the seller has sent a date and time, the system sets a four hour time frame for the buyer to respond. If the invitation goes unanswered, the listing will automatically change back from Pending to Available.

Why doesn’t a listing support uploading HEIC images?

Apple's default HEIC image support requires special server software that isn’t available on our Canadian hosting plan. We’ve chosen to keep costs low to support the community and keep listings affordable. Here are instructions to change Apple Photos' setting to 'most compatible' so your images are taken in jpg format and are easily uploaded.

How is reliability recorded?

Reliability reflects participation and follow-through with scheduled meetups. The system records when Meetups are accepted, completed, cancelled, or marked as no-show.

Are users verified?

No. While the site has numerous security gates in place, we do not perform identity verification or background checks. Members can Report any listing that is inappropriate.

Is it safe?

Users are responsible for arranging safe public meetings, and safeguarding their private details such as email and phone number, and exercising common sense precautions.

Can minors use the site?

According to the Terms of Use, individuals under the age of majority must use the platform with parental or guardian supervision.

Can I advertise on this site?

If and when this site opens to advertisers, it will only focus on local businesses.
